THE "NAUE" OF POSTA FIBRENO

This is a wooden boat used for fishing but also for transporting people (up to five or six at a time) and aquatic herbs destined for the cattle of Lake Posta Fibreno, in Frosinone province.

It dates from the late 19th – early 20th century and was in use until the mid-1950s. It was first entrusted to the Ittiogenico Establishment (Stabilimento Ittiogenico) of Rome, where it was exhibited in a museum. The Institute, later merged in 1995 with the Regional Agency for Development and Innovation of Agriculture in Lazio (ARSIAL), was responsible for protecting inland-water fishing and safeguarding lacustrine and riverine natural habitats, with great benefit for fish restocking. Around 2007 the building fell into abandonment. Dr. Enrico Gelosi, director of the Establishment, thus entrusted the “naue” to the MNAI so as not to lose this specimen and to ensure that it would continue to tell its long history tied to the protection of inland waters and their fauna.
